I am going to unveil my thoughts about Religion and how it shapes gender roles and the societal conventions that we are expected to follow.

Gender and religion have long been intertwined in intricate ways, shaping societal norms, roles, and expectations. From the roles of women in religious institutions to the diverse expressions of gender identity within faith communities, the intersection of gender and religion is a rich and evolving landscape.

However, there have also been examples of prominent women in religious history who challenged traditional gender roles, such as Mary Magdalene in Christianity and Khadija bint Khuwaylid in Islam.

But Mary Magdalene has not been left untouched by harmful interpretations. Unfortunately, certain portrayals continue to reinforce the misconception that she was a prostitute or a woman possessed by demons. These views, although unsupported by biblical accounts, still hold popularity in certain circles. It is worth examining why this theory has gained traction and sharing thoughts on the matter. This, coupled with the influential sermon given by Pope Gregory I in the 6th century, further solidified the perception of Mary Magdalene as a repentant sinner.

It's not like it is only happening in one religion. It's common across most religions. For example,

In Hinduism, Sita, the central female character in the Hindu epic Ramayana, is often misunderstood and subjected to criticism. Despite her unwavering devotion and loyalty, she has faced scrutiny and blame for certain events in the epic. However, alternative interpretations highlight her strength, resilience, and portrayal as a symbol of virtue. (Which would have been by another woman, maybe!)

In Christianity, other than Magdalene, in the Bible, there are women such as Eve and Delilah who have been misinterpreted or portrayed negatively. Eve, as the first woman, has sometimes been unfairly blamed for the fall of humanity. Similarly, Delilah has been depicted as a seductress who betrays Samson, disregarding her own complex motivations and the larger context of the story.

In Islam, Aisha bint Abu Bakr, the wife of Prophet Muhammad, has been a subject of controversy and misunderstanding. Misrepresentations and misconceptions about her age at the time of marriage have led to her character being wrongly judged and misunderstood. However, her significant contributions as a scholar and leader in early Islamic history are often overlooked.

In Buddhism, Mahaprajapati Gautami, despite being a pioneering figure in establishing the order of Bhikkhunis (female monastic community), has often been overshadowed by the male disciples of the Buddha. Her leadership and role in shaping the early Buddhist community are not widely recognized.
